Supreme Court to hear School Vouchers case

Today on Occupy The Microphone, join Gorgeous Gregg, and Double A as they discuss some of today's news headlines and community information.

Supreme Court to hear School Vouchers case
A school voucher program in Louisiana will be the subject of a case to be heard by the Supreme Court on Tuesday. This has been a hot button issue pushed by Republicans and resisted by Democrats. The question is whether public funds can be used to pay for education in private schools. Religion seems to be the lightening rod in this case as stated by individuals opposing the voucher program. “Louisiana legislators are siphoning money from tax-starved public schools to feed private schools that promote dogma and aren’t accountable to the taxpayers,” said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United. “It’s a travesty, and the court should put an end to it.”

Fertilized Eggs are People too?

5:00PM EST
Today on Occupy the Microphone, Gregg and Double A take on abortion rights. While the South Carolina legislature considers a new law, which would declare a fertilized egg a "person" and Arkansas' legislature overrides the governor's veto of the nation's most restrictive abortion laws, a federal judge rules an Idaho law unconstitutional. Laws restricting abortion rights are under consideration in Kansas, Texas and Alabama. Are these state level efforts targeted at actually making abortion illegal or is this just another effort to turn our attention away from other more pressing issues and raise money for politicians from abortion foes?

Then, Rand Paul filibusters for 12 hours against the appointment of John Brennan to head the CIA, we ask if this is a principled stand, or grand standing by Senator Paul? Will this be good for the Republicans? For Democrats? For the nation and the Constitution?

Daisy Deadhead will offer up her commentary, and we will be joined by Pat LaMarche. Pat is just back from her "Babes of Wrath" tour with homeless advocate Diane Nilan. Hugo Chavez subcombs to cancer

5:00PM EST

Chavez, the president of Venezuela lost his battle with cancer and died yesterday. Tens of thousands of Venezuelans turned out in the streets to pay their respects.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul (R), as promised started his filibuster of of John Brennan’s nomination for the C.I.A. He started by saying “I rise today to begin to filibuster John Brennan’s nomination for the C.I.A., I will speak until I can no longer speak. I will speak as long as it takes, until the alarm is sounded from coast to coast that our Constitution is important, that your rights to trial by jury are precious, that no American should be killed by a drone on American soil without first being charged with a crime, without first being found to be guilty by a court.”

North Korea vs the United States

Dennis Rodman has become headline news again pertaining to his visit to North Korea and his spending time with its leader Kim Jong Un. In an uncomfortable interview, Rodman engaged in with George Stephanopoulos, Stephanopoulos feigned ignorance when Rodman made the point that the United States government has prison camps and presented Rodman with a Human Rights Watch report on North Korea. However, that same organization raises alarms over the United States prison system that is the largest in the world.

In related news, the majority of US held prisoners are incarcerated for non-violent so-called drug crimes. After voters in States like Colorado and Washington successfully legalized marijuana, a number of former and current DEA heads are urging the Obama administration to sue those states since marijuana possession remains a federal offense.

Continuing with the issue of prisons and the treatment of prisoners in the United States, a federal judge for the third time has ordered the State of Louisiana to release Angola 3 PrisonerAlbert Woodfox. Woodfox has been held in the tortuous conditions of solitary confinement for over 40 years for the killing of a prison guard on flimsy evidence that even the widow of the prison guard does not believe. Woodfox and supporters believe that he was targeted because of his political and human rights activism and that he is a victim of the once secret and illegal FBI COINTELPRO program that targeted so-called radical activist of the 1960's and 70s.

Daisy Deadhead tackles the issue of Nikki Haley and the theft of social security numbers under the governor's watch in her Daisy's DeadAir segment.
