She will call in to the show today to discuss the Obama administrations drone program that sentences individuals to death without due process, has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of children, primarily in Pakistan, and has killed at least three US citizens. She has a book out on the subject titled "Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control" and she is currently on a book tour and will be in Asheville, NC tonight.

While it is premature to point fingers at who is responsible for an alleged chemical attack in Syria, NATO allies, including France, Britain and Turkey and pushing for more US involvement in the two year old civil war. However, President Obama stated that he does not expect to have boots on the ground in the war torn country. The President said, "Sometimes what we've seen is that folks will call for immediate action, jumping into stuff that does not turn out well, gets us mired in very difficult situations, can result in us being drawn into very expensive, difficult, costly interventions that actually breed more resentment in the region. The United States continues to be the one country that people expect can do more than just simply protect their borders. But that does not mean that we have to get involved with everything immediately,".

The father of a Cherokee child has been arrested for not returning his child to a white couple who adopted the child from her mother who did not tell the father she was pregnant. Cherokee Nation member Dusten Brown asserted his parental rights months after learning of the child’s adoption. A family court judge had ruled in the father’s favor but the South Carolina Supreme Court allowed the adoption to go through and Mr. Brown, who is a member of the US military, posted a bond $10,000 and refuses to give the whereabouts of his daughter.
Speaking of parental rights, 'Lost Boys' actor Jason Patric, who lost a battle for custody of a son conceived using invitro fertilization is urging California lawmakers to change laws and afford greater legal rights to sperm donors. If men are going to sue for rights to IVF babies, what about the rights of egg donors? Many birth mothers of IVF babies are not the actual genetic mothers of IVF offspring, so what if egg donors start suing for their visitation rights? The whole issue of invitro fertilization babies is a legal minefield waiting to go BOOM. The technology has outpaced the law, and now the bill is coming due.

Eric Wood of Another Voice is joining us in studio today.
Rep. John Lewis was one of Dr. Martin Luther King’s top lieutenants during the civil rights era of the sixties. Lewis suffered many beatings while participating in acts of civil disobedience in defiance of the nation’s Jim Crow laws showing great courage. Dr. King was a victim of unconstitutional domestic spying and wiretapping as a target of the FBI’s illegal COINTELPRO operations that targeted Black leaders and leftist groups. Rep. Lewis recently interviewed by The Guardian said Edward Snowden, the NSA whistle-blower, was appealing to "a higher law" when he disclosed top-secret documents showing the extent of NSA surveillance of both Americans and foreigners. Less than twenty-four hours after praising Snowden’s disclosures as an act of civil disobedience, Rep. Lewis seems to have lost his courage and began walking back his comments.
The President had an unscheduled meeting today with civil libertarians and top executives of tech giants including Apple, AT&T and Google. The meeting was leaked by an administration official who was not authorized to comment publicly on the meeting and only leaked the information on the condition of anonymity. The official stated that, "The meeting was part of the ongoing dialogue the president has called for on how to respect privacy while protecting national security in a digital era,” No word yet on if the administration will seek to investigate who leaked information about the meeting to reporters.
Yesterday we reported that the ATF was entrapping people with low-level criminal convictions by enticing them to participate in robbing drug houses that did not exist. The FBI is now under scrutiny for approving the commission of thousands of crimes every year by its informants. "This is all being operated clandestinely. Congress doesn't even have the information, I think there's a problem here, and we should have full disclosure to Congress " said Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., who has sponsored a bill that would require all federal agencies to notify lawmakers about the most serious crimes their informants commit.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives which is supposed to be enforcing the nation's gun laws is being accused of enticing over 1,000 individuals to commit drug related crimes with promises of a huge payoff. Undercover agents seek out individuals with prior low-level criminal convictions and entice them to participate in plots to rob non-existence drug houses. Some prosecutors have refused to participate in these operations and judges state the expensive sting operations border on entrapment and have resulted in several suspects being killed.
The Kurds in Syria have tried to stay out of the war, but Al Qaeda seems determined to punish them and force them to get involved. Al Qaeda is said to bombing entire Kurdish villages, men, women and children. US allies, the Turks are more than likely thrilled to see genocide practiced against the Kurds. Al Qaeda weapons are being supplied by the Syria opposition who in turn are being supplied by the US and Europe. How can we support the opposition while simultaneously demanding justice for Kurds?
JP Morgan Chase is facing criminal and civil investigations related to allegations that they defrauded investors with shoddy mortgage securities. The United States attorney’s office for the Eastern District of California has “preliminary concluded” that JPMorgan Chase flouted federal laws with its sale of sub-prime mortgage securities from 2005 to 2007. Skeptics doubt if the bank, like many other banks, will face true justice. Other investigations have not resulted in any prosecutions of bank officers and one commentator says these "criminal investigations" will amount to nothing more than insignificant punishments and petty fines will be levied after no-contest pleas have been negotiated to protect the guilty. If the federal regulators were serious, top-level individuals would have already been prosecuted, finance monopolies would have been broken up and Congress would have already reinstated Glass-Steagle.

The North Carolina General Assembly is done for the year, must be nice to take off work with five months left in the calendar year. However, the Moral Monday protests that have been going on in Raleigh will continue as progressives in North Carolina take their protests on the road. At the protests in Asheville, it is estimated that between 5,000 and 10,000 protesters turned out to demonstrate against a number of recent laws passed by Republicans who control all three branches of the North Carolina state government.
On August 4, a planned online protest against Twitter trolls sending violent tweets to women on the popular social media website backfired somewhat. British journalist Caitlin Moran was calling for feminist to log off Twitter for a day but a backlash developed which questioned silencing women online and offline would be giving in to misogynists. Some women took issue with the protest as many felt it was born out of white privilege and “it alienated and excluded marginalized women -- poor women, transgender women, women of color, etc. -- who don't have the luxury of choosing to fall silent”.
