Despite the turmoil in Iraq with 1,000 Iraqis killed in the month of July alone, the Pentagon is set to deliver $2.7 billion dollars worth of weapons to the Iraqi government of Nouri al-Maliki. Critics warn that with the instability that exists in the country and an increased Al Qaeda presence, the weapons that include 681 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and 40 truck-mounted launchers, as well as 3 Hawk anti-aircraft batteries with 216 Hawk missiles, could easily fall into the wrong hands.

President Obama announced yesterday that the US military is cancelling joint exercises with the Egyptian military citing deepening violence and turmoil in the country as the military backed-interim government continues its assault against supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi who was removed from office and arrested despite winning a democratic election. This follows US Sec. of State John Kerry’s condemnation of the escalating violence in Egypt.

Yesterday the Pentagon announced that it will extend benefits such as health coverage and base housing to members of the military in same sex marriages with legal certificates of marriage.
