Sharon Osbourne blames Bieber's bad behavior on Black people

DOWNLOAD MP3

Sharon Osbourne, reality tv star, talk show host and wife to rocker Ozzy Osbourne recently came out attacking the bad behavior of pop star Justin Bieber. The problem for many is that in attacking Beiber's behavior, she attacked Black people by stating, “Oh, we’re the bad boys!” F*ck off! You don’t know what bad is. And I think that he’s lost, I really do. I think he doesn’t realize he’s white and not black, that’s a huge problem."

Lon Snowden, the father of NSA whistle-blower Eric Snowden believes that his son should not come back to the United States because he would never get a fair trial. In backing his son's quest for political asylum, Mr. Snowden said, “The fact is no assurances have been made that he will be given a fair trial, that he deserves, or any citizen of this nation is given by our Constitution,”.

Were Florida deputies standing their ground when they shot a man in his own drive way retrieving a cigarette lighter from his own car? Two Florida deputies responding to a call about a suspected car thief fired a total of fifteen rounds at 60 year old Roy Middleton who was hit two times. The deputies are claiming Middleton did not follow instructions and they were in fear for their safety. Middleton says, he was told to "Get your hands where I can see them." and when he turned around with his hands raised they opened fire.

Pope Francis has left many people speculating about the direction of the Catholic Church and the whether or not it would soon ordain Priest who are openly gay or if it will lead to a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. However, some are writing that the media has gotten the story wrong and Pope Francis was responding to a reporter’s question about homosexual priests who are living a celibate life when he said, “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”

22 million American households relying on the SNAP program to provide food assistance will see their benefits drop this coming November. The looming cuts have nothing to do with the recent Farm Bill and proposed cuts to the program because these cuts were planned years ago. This news comes following an AP report that says 4 out 5 adults in America are living below or near the poverty line.

What did the FBI know about plans to kill leaders in Occupy Houston

DOWNLOAD MP3

What did the FBI know about plans to kill leaders in Occupy Houston, when did they find out, and why didn't they tell the targets that they had a bulls-eye on their forehead?

Today on Occupy the Microphone we are joined by Paul B. Kennedy of Houston Texas. An attorney in private practice, he is a member of the National Lawyers Guild. He served as a legal adviser for some of the folks in Occupy Houston. When recent FBI documents were released showing a plot to kill peaceful protesters in Occupy Houston he implied that it was not impossible to imagine law enforcement involvement in such a plot.

We'll ask Mr. Kennedy about how law enforcement and Occupy Houston worked together, what the history of law enforcement in extra-legal killings looks like, and what we can do to be sure law enforcement does protect and serve.

We'll also be joined by Carl Gibson, one of the leaders of Occupy Houston who may have been left in the cross-hairs because the FBI didn't tell him he was being targeted. Co-founder of usuncut, an anti-austerity group, he writes at Huffington Post, Common dreams, and MichaelMoore.com. He wrote an open letter to FBI Director Mueller about the assassination plot, calling on Mueller to resign for his role in the affair.

Juror says Zimmerman was guilty "in our hearts"

DOWNLOAD MP3

Eric Wood will be joining us again in the studio today to help us break down and analyze today's news.

The only other juror to speak out about the Zimmerman murder trial verdict told the world that George Zimmerman "got away with murder" for killing Trayvon Martin and she owes an apology to Trayvon Martin's parents. Juror B29 said she and her fellow jurors, "had to grab our hearts and put it aside and look at the evidence." We will also look at the latest information out about the Michael Dunn murder trial. Michael Dunn, a white male, was charged last year with killing black teenager Jordan Davis in Florida.

A man who is a registered sex offender, and his wife were allegedly murdered because of his status as a sex offender and he may have been tracked down through the state sex offender registry. Jeremy Lee Moody, 30, and his wife, Christine Moody, 36, both of 213 S. 1st St., Lockhart, were arrested early Wednesday and charged by the Union County Sheriff's Office with two counts each of murder in the deaths of Charles Marvin Parker, 59, and Gretchen Dawn Parker, 51. The murders have been described as random.

Despite what the local media is reporting about the SC Office of Regulatory Staff presenting a “settlement” with Duke to the Public Service Commission that would reduce the amount of the rate increase Duke would receive, the work surrounding the resistance to the rate hike is not complete.

Bankruptcy: First They Came for Detroit

DOWNLOAD MP3

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes dealt what is considered back-to-back wins for city of Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr following a two-hour hearing at a packed courthouse. A lot is at stake in Detroit and workers and retirees are fighting to keep their pensions. The rulings issued by Judge Rhodes are said to allow the bankruptcy to proceed without being bogged down in lawsuits in state courts.

The first wave of school closings have happened in Chicago and like Detroit pension holders there are no federal bail outs forthcoming. While schools are being closed in Chicago, the federal government is thinking about the future of the children as the US Senate quietly approved $166 million to reactivate Thomson prison and two other prisons in the state of Illinois.

Speaking of Federal prisons, despite the US government, US courts and even at one time the current US president argued that the crack cocaine vs. powder disparities in sentencing were grossly unfair and racists in their application, the US Justice department is fighting to keep mostly poor Black people locked up under the unfair and racist sentencing guidelines . "On 17 May 2013, the US court of appeals for the sixth circuit held that the new, "fair" sentences must be applied to all those previously sentenced under laws that everyone acknowledges were discriminatory." So why is the US Justice Department seeking to keep these men and women in prison and overturn the courts decision?

Bradley Manning was "aiding the enemy"?

DOWNLOAD MP3

Kevin Zeese of Popular Resistance will be joining us today to discuss the Bradley Manning trial and other issues.

Many are criticizing the US Justice Department and the President's pursuit of an "aiding the enemy" charge against Bradley Manning for turning over material to Wikileaks to expose the war crimes and atrocities that have taken place in Iraq.

If we have time, we will also take a look at the Detroit bankruptcy issue and if "white flight" has helped to bring about the financial crisis the city is facing.

Raymond Kelley says he was saving people of color with Stop & Frisk

DOWNLOAD MP3

NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelley seems to be the front-runner among candidates to be the next Homeland Security chief. However, many civil rights groups and Cornel West have problem with his possible nomination over the massive stop and frisk program, which has targeted young Black men and boys in New York City. Kelley defended stop and frisk tactics claiming it saved the lives of 7,383 people, mostly young men of color. The NYPD's own statics showed that weapons and drugs were found on a higher percentage of white victims of stop and frisk.

NPR loved the President speech about the Zimmerman murder trial and called it Spontaneous' and 'Stunning'. Other outlets were not so nice.

In local news, former South Carolina state treasurer and multimillionaire Thomas Ravenel was arrested this week on drunken driving charges in the Hamptons in New York. Ravenel had speculated on returning to politics recently. A new hotel is expected to be announced soon for downtown Greenville, now that City Council has agreed to pay $12 million for a parking garage, the public portion of the public/private project.

The Florida teen who was profiled, tracked and eventually killed by George Zimmerman, a so-called neighborhood watchman. Daisy is a bit disappointed that herself, Gregg and Double A were among the few white people who showed up at the rally.

SC Senator Lindsey Graham plans to introduce legislation approving a military strike against Iran by the Obama administration. Graham already supports US involvement in taking military action in Syria and he also supported the overthrow of the Libyan government.

Grand Jury refuses to indict in police killing of NY Marine vet

DOWNLOAD MP3

A Grand Jury refused to indict the police officer who shot Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., an elderly unarmed Marine veteran, through both arms and his lungs in his own home. A court has ruled that the White Plains police department must release information to Chamberlain’s family.

Another judge has ruled that Bradley Manning's prosecution for aiding the enemy, and violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, can move forward. Manning, who admits he leaked documents and videos known as “Collateral Murder”, The “Iraq War Files”, the “Afghanistan War Files” and “The Diplomatic Cables Files” to Wikileaks, was hoping the judge would rule that the government had not met their burden of proof.

A Wisconsin man has been convicted of shooting and killing his 13-year-old neighbor. Now he hopes to be found not responsible because he was insane at the time. A video by the 76-year-old man's own surveillance equipment showed the man shooting the teen. The shooter accused the boy of stealing his guns, and the police searched the dead boy's home. None of the killer's guns was in the child's home. The teen's mother was detained by the police for over an hour even after the killer admitted to the shooting.

Finally, two companies, which planned to use fracking to extract methane gas in New York, have decided to abandon their plans. Landowners who were set to be paid by the company are upset and are preparing to sue. Ted Nugent says Black people are not oppressed

DOWNLOAD MP3

Right wing talking head Ted Nugent seems to be confused about whether or not Black people are oppressed or not or perhaps, he is not confused and just promoting confusion. The ever outspoken rocker who has become a political fixture on the right says that Black people are “bought into this lie” that they are oppressed.

Speaking of confusion, President Obama is hinting that his administration may nominate NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelley to head Homeland Security. US Rep. Peter King a Republican out of New York State said yesterday that people close to Kelley said he would consider serving in President Obama’s cabinet if offered the job. This comes after President Obama said, “Mr. Kelly might be very happy where he is. But if he’s not, I’d want to know about it. . . . Obviously, he’d be very well-qualified for the job.” Sen. Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, first mentioned Kelley’s name for the position a little over week ago. However, there seems to be some confusion about President Obama's position when just last month his administration joined others in calling for an independent monitor of the NYPD because the department engages in racial profiling to enforce it's Stop & Frisk policy which was the subject of a recent class action lawsuit.

The attorneys for George Zimmerman have been making their victory tour media rounds and indicated on the television talk show “The View” that their lives may have been changed forever. Stevie Wonder is Boycotting Florida for Trayvon

DOWNLOAD MP3

Today on Occupy the Microphone, the nation continues to react to the Zimmerman acquittal. From people in the streets to Stevie Wonder boycotting Florida to the Green Party issuing a statement, this story is clearly not done. Expect backlash and cries of “time to move on.”

Then, we look at the latest in the curious case of Edward Snowden. As we reported here, Snowden held a press conference and asked for help from human rights organizations in securing asylum. Reports indicate that Snowden is seeking temporary refuge in Russia.

Then we hear from our second member of the Green Shadow Cabinet. Ben Manski of Wisconsin will join us. He is the Green Shadow Government's White House Chief of Staff and has issued a widely read statement about Edward Snowden.

Finally, we wrap up the whirlwind of trials and intrigue with a review of the Bradley Manning case. He brought forward ten witnesses. The prosecution says that Manning deliberately used Wikileaks to communicate secrets to Al-Qaeda in an attempt to do harm to the United States. Friend of the show Alexa O'Brien writes at The Daily Beast that journalism is on trial in the Manning case.

Juror B37 Speaks, Occupy The Microphone discusses

DOWNLOAD MP3

Today we will be discussing Juror #b37's interview with Anderson Cooper of CNN, listening and analyzing excerpts.

Daisy asks, "Why do obviously racist white people think they are not racist?” What is the psychology of the denial of racism and race matters? What has changed since the days of the civil rights movement in which racism was openly acknowledged and "worked on"?

Daisy believes today that racism is still present but instead of acknowledged, it is openly denied. This denial leads to violent and irrational outcomes, like the verdict in the Zimmerman trial.

We will also discuss one comment by someone who watched the interview and said "Trayvon Martin and Rachel Jeantel were like Martians to that juror. When Juror B37 said Rachel was not credible, she meant that she had never met people like that before."

She even admitted she could not understand her, yet never asked for clarifications, as she could have.

Juror B37 was planning to write a book but now that book deal has been cancelled due to the outrage of social activist using social media.

Trayvon Martin, Edward Snowden & Bradley Manning updates

5:00PM EST

Today Eric Wood of Another Voice with Eric and Friends joins us in the studio.

We will be discussing the latest news from the courtrooms in Bradley Manning's case in Virginia and George Zimmerman's case in Florida, as well as more wild speculation about Edward Snowden. How can someone live in an airport for weeks and never have his photo snapped? We, of course, will have the answer.

Duke Energy is seeking rate hikes in both North and South Carolina. The Public Service Commission will be hearing from ratepayers soon, and Eric will have some ideas about what you can do to stop these proposed rate hikes in their tracks.

Near the bottom of the hour, Dr. Margaret Flowers will join us. Dr. Flowers has been on the show, most recently to talk about Medicare for All. Today she will bring us up to date on another trial, hers! She and several of her associates are on trial in New York City for violating a 10 PM curfew at a Viet Nam War memorial in that city. She and 24 others were arrested as they read out the names of soldiers killed in recent wars.

Another well burns in the Gulf of Mexico

DOWNLOAD MP3

Mary Olson of Nuclear Information Resource Service will join us by phone today to discuss nuclear waste disposal and transportation issues.

Another environmental disaster could be in the making off the coast of Louisiana as a platform producing oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico is reported to be leaking a mixture of water and natural gas. The Gulf of Mexico states including Louisiana suffered devastating damage due to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion.

As both the defence and prosecution have rested their cases in the George Zimmerman murder trial for killing 17 yr-old Trayvon Martin last year, another high profile case is concluding. The Bradley Manning defence team has rested its case in his military trial after calling just ten witnesses. Manning is looking at a possible sentence of life in military custody with no chance of parole for allegedly aiding the enemy by his leak of classified material to the whistle-blowing organization Wikileaks.
Earlier this year the Emergency Alert System in Montana broadcast a zombie apocalypse exposing the relative ease of which these systems can be hacked. According to Mike Davis, the principal research scientist who discovered the holes, anyone can log on to the Internet and remotely control these systems and send out false alerts to the large populations served geographically by these systems. Cherokee county in South Carolina recently launched a new alert system for emergencies and crime information using a free service provided by the private corporation Nixel. Its system is said to be secure with Nixle's servers all located at NLETS in Phoenix, Arizona, providing added security from would-be-hackers. This is said to enable local police departments nationwide to send immediate alerts and advisories using their secure police terminals.

SC Christians targeted in terrorism plots

5:00PM EST

Are evangelical Christians in South Carolina being targeted in terrorism investigations for their politics and religious affiliations?

The Nation is reporting, "There has been talk of informants and undercover agents luring young, conservative evangelicals across the South into sham terrorist plots."

Law enforcement informants usually have targeted the Muslim community with the support of Conservative Evangelicals. Are they now getting an opportunity to feel the pain of the Muslim community or are they reaping what they have sown?

A former member and organizer for the Aryan Nations has a change of heart while serving time in prison. “Hate Behind Blue Eyes, Memoirs of an American Nazi,” is the name of the self-published book written by Zach Beck in which he reportedly disavows the neo-Nazi movement and apologizes to the communities he victimized.

Senator Lindsey Graham may or may not face a challenge for his Senate seat from former S.C. Treasurer Thomas Ravenel (R-Charleston) who is mulling a primary challenge in 2014. With Ravenel's record, we are sure Graham would welcome the challenge.

The three Cleveland kidnap victims speak out

DOWNLOAD MP3

The three victims of alleged kidnapper, rapist and murderer Ariel Castro each spoke out in video-recorded messages. For the first time since being rescued, the public has gotten to see the faces and hear the words of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight who wanted to thank the community for all it had done in aiding in their recovery process.

According to the Associated Press, a former Guantanamo Bay prosecutor, Retired Air Force Col. Morris Davis testified for PFC Bradley Manning’s defense and stated that secret detainee assessments that Army Pfc. Bradley Manning gave to Wikileaks did not threaten national security.

Speaking of Guantanamo Bay, over 120 Guantanamo Bay detainees continue their hunger strike to protest being held indefinitely without charges and other abuses. The hunger strike first started in March 2013 with less than half of the total amount of prisoners to now including a solid majority. Rapper and actor Yassin Bey also known as Mos Def participated in a force-feeding demonstration, which was filmed and distributed by the Human Rights organization Reprieve.

The Obama administration was asked by Muslim community leaders to stop force-feeding the detainees during the month-long fast of Ramadan that started on Monday. The US government said that barring "unforeseen emergency or operational issues" it would respect the daylight fast and try to force feed 45 detainees only at night. US District Judge Gladys Kessler in rejecting a detainee's request through lawyers to stop the practice said that she does not have the authority to do so and only the President can order it halted but she also ruled that force-feeding is almost certainly a violation of international law and medical ethics.

White victim of Stop & Frisk sues the NYPD

DOWNLOAD PODCAST

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has started a new controversy with his latest comments about the NYPD not stopping and frisking enough minorities while stopping and frisking too many white people. Al Sharpton has called on the mayor to apologize publicly while city council members and mayoral candidates are also taking him to task over the comments made last week on a radio broadcast by the Mayor. Information about a lawsuit filed by a 22 yr-old white female is being reported on the heels of this new controversy concerning Stop & Frisk. College graduate Samantha Rosenbaum was stopped and frisked last year after being followed by plains clothes NYPD officers and treated roughly in an invasive search for drugs. “I don’t think anyone, no matter what color you are, deserves to be treated like that,” Samantha Rosenbaum told The NY Post.

Despite the apparent lies by US government officials that there are not illegally spying on Americans, more evidence is surfacing that the NSA's vast surveillance network is capturing and preserving billions of emails and internet phone calls in a powerful digital databases. This includes users of Skype, Google Voice and other “voice over Internet” systems.

Does the F.B.I need independent oversight in agent-involved shootings? Looking at internal F.B.I documents from 1993 to early 2011, agents fatally shot about 70 “subjects” and wounded about 80 others — and every one of those episodes was deemed justified according to F.B.I records obtained by The New York Times through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.

Did you know that the State of South Carolina never abolished slavery? Members of the Facebook group called "Move To Abolish 21st Century Slavery" have been researching what state constitutions say about slavery and involuntary servitude and thus far, they have found that South Carolina and the Florida constitutions make no mention about abolishing slavery or involuntary servitude. The research is part of an effort to educate the public on the fact that the US Constitution does not actually abolish slavery or involuntary servitude and should be amended.

Standing up for the Fourth Amendment on July 4th

DOWNLOAD PODCAST

Efia Nwangaza will be joining us in studio today.

Thousands of websites have joined together to promote a 4th of July message that stand for 4th Amendment protections against unconstitutional searches and seizures that the US government has being conducting though the PRISM program revealed by former private contractor employee Edward Snowden.

Despite declarations of transparency concerning the US governments targeted killings by drones; the Obama administration is having trouble finding the words to explain the recent killing of a 10 year old in Yemen.

In another example of America's prison slavery system, inmates at the Medium Security Institution in St. Louis Missouri are saying they were forced to fight in Gladiator style matches for the amusement of prison guards. This reminds us of the days when those enslaved by the Roman Empire were forced to fight to the death in arenas for public amusement.

Egypt continues to experience turmoil after the so-called Arab Spring that brought about the end of the despot rule of the US backed Hosni Mubarak. The military has ousted the democratically elected President Mohammed Morsi who replaced Mubarak after millions demonstrated against him fearing he was taking the country towards an Islamist based government giving too much power to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Possible plot to assassinate Occupy Houston movement leaders

5:00PM EST
Today on Occupy The Microphone, we will address concerns from a listener who questioned using Wikipedia as a source of information when referring to the etymology of the word "Cracker". Among several examples of the historical use of the word we gave, we included the use of the word to refer to plantation overseers who "Cracked" whips across the backs of enslaved Africans. We would like to explain why Wikipedia is good a source as any corporate or other information portals as those who are not members of the Wikipedia community do not know the processes by which entries are vetted. One source for the Wikipedia entry was published in 1842 in the book by James S Buckingham, "The slave states of America", Fisher, Son, & Co., 210pp.

Did a law enforcement agency formulate or discuss carrying out a plot to assassinated leaders of the Houston area Occupy Movement? Redacted FBI documents seem to suggest that it was in fact discussed “if deemed necessary,” The documents, secured with a Freedom of Information Act request to the FBI from The Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, are available at their page. Look in particular at page 61. To find it easily, click on the linked page, find the "pages" tab, click on it and scroll down until you see Page 61. You will see the actual FBI document right there. Find the FBI documents right here .

In a tragic case involving citizen journalism and animal rights, a man's canine companion was shot dead by a Hawthorne, California police officer. Leon Rosby along with other citizens was filming police officers who were reportedly trying to apprehend an armed robbery suspect.

Rosby and the others were at least 25 to 30 yards away from two officers standing on a sidewalk when the two officers said something to Rosby and he told them he was "filming them so that no one’s civil rights were being violated.” The officers then approached Rosby who was returning from a dog park with his canine companion.

When officers moved in to arrest Rosby, his companion became agitated and jumped out of the car resulting in another Hawthorne police officer shooting the dog down in the street. Do citizens have a right to film police in open view of the public and should officers have allowed Rosby to secure his Max and put him back in the vehicle?

Finally, wil the revelations of the NSA spying on not just Americans but also on foreign governments put the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the US-European Union “Free Trade” Agreement in jeopardy? President Obama says everyone spies on everyone, is that a valid excuse?
