Food Deserts and Homeless Dumping

DOWNLOAD MP3

Tune in to Occupy The Microphone and join Gorgeous Gregg, Daisy Deadhead and Double A as they take on the issues and news of the day.

Food deserts is a term used to describe usually low income urban areas where residents without transportation struggle to obtain food. Grocery chain operator and consultant Jeffrey Brown said that with careful planning and appropriate subsidies, grocery stores can thrive in these struggling areas. Brown operates 11 ShopRite stores in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey. It appears that what Brown is proposing is not unlike the tax breaks, land grants and other breaks given to NFL franchise owners to attract or keep an NFL team in a city.

In disturbing news out of Detroit, Michigan, city managers and the Detroit Police department have figured out how to handle the large homeless population in a city hit hard by the foreclosure crisis. The ACLU of Michigan says that the Detroit Police are picking up homeless people and removing them from popular economic districts of the city and driving them miles away and "dumping" them.
